Description: Pitch, melody, rhythm, timing, choral repetition, volume, tone, pausing, breathing – Most people will readily associate this vocabulary with the field of music. English language teachers may also associate it with teaching pronunciation. In this workshop, participants will explore ways to help students improve their oral proficiency through parallels between music and pronunciation. Activities will involve tools such as the metronome and staff lines. No formal training in music is necessary.

The Presenter: Carolyn Samuel has taught ESL, EFL and has done teacher training at universities in both Canada and abroad. She currently teaches credit courses in oral and written academic English at the McGill Writing Centre and oral skills methodology in the TESL programme in McGill’s Faculty of Education. Carolyn is a recipient of McGill’s Principal’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching. Go to  www.arts.mcgill.ca/programs/esl/csamuel for more information about Carolyn’s teaching/learning activities.
